Over four weeks, this course is an introduction to the world of ceramics and the many ways you can shape, build, decorate, and experiment with clay. You’ll learn the foundations of hand-building while having plenty of space to explore your own ideas and develop your personal style.

Throughout the course, we’ll work with pinch, coil, slab, and hollowing techniques, creating around 4–6 pieces along the way. From functional objects you can use at home to more sculptural and challenging forms, each week gives you something new to explore. And making the pieces is only half the fun. You’ll also experiment with underglazes, painting techniques, engobes, and glazing, learning how colour and surface can completely transform your work.

No previous ceramics experience is needed, just come ready to experiment, get a little messy, and see where the clay takes you. All materials, tools, underglazes, glazes, and firings are included in the course fee of CHF 360.
What we’ll do
- Week 1 (October 5) — Getting to Know Clay
- Start with the basics and learn your first hand-building techniques: pinching & coiling. You’ll create your first pieces while getting comfortable shaping and working with clay.
- Week 2 (October 12) — Building with Slabs
- Learn how to build with slabs and start creating more structured forms. You’ll also add some colour, decorating your Week 1 pieces with underglazes.
- Week 3 (October 19) — Exploring New Forms
- Take things a little further with hollowing and more sculptural forms. You’ll keep building new pieces while experimenting with different ways of shaping, painting, and decorating clay.
- Week 4 (November 2) — Finishing Touches
- Time to bring everything together. Finish and decorate your remaining pieces, experiment with engobes, and learn the basics of glazing before everything is ready for its final firing.
