In der Messa di Gloria verbindet Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) kirchliche Chormusik mit der Lebensfreude und emotionalen Tiefe einer italienischen Oper. Hier zeichnet sich schon seine aussergewöhnliche Begabung ab, wofür er später als Opernkomponist berühmt werden sollte: Eine reiche melodische Fantasie, grosse Ausdruckskraft und ein feines Gespür für Dramatik.

Die Bezeichnung Messa di Gloria verweist auf die besondere Ausstrahlung des Werks. Schon die ersten Takte lassen aufhorchen: Eine grosse orchestrale Klangfülle kombiniert mit wunderbaren Chorstimmen schaffen eine festliche Atmosphäre. Gleichzeitig überrascht das Werk immer wieder durch intime Momente voller Innigkeit und Wärme. Besonders eindrucksvoll sind die beiden Solopartien für Tenor und Bariton, die bereits den zukünftigen Opernkomponisten erkennen lassen.

Mit Ludwig van Beethovens (1770-1827) berühmter Fünften Symphonie bietet dieses Konzert einen zweiten Leckerbissen. Für beide Werke gilt: Grosse Musik ist kraftvoll.
