1816: das «Jahr ohne Sommer» in Lord Byrons Haus am Genfersee. Eine Gruppe junger englischer Urlauber, darunter der Dichter Percy Bysshe Shelley und seine Verlobte und künftige Ehefrau Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin, vertreiben sich angesichts des schlechten Wetters die Zeit mit Geistergeschichten und halbwissenschaftlichen Diskussionen. Hier erfindet die 19-jährige die Geschichte des jungen Schweizer Wissenschaftlers Dr. Victor Frankenstein, dem es gelingt, einen künstlichen Menschen zu erschaffen, der auf grausame Weise in das Leben seines Schöpfers eingreift.
