Die Wege zweier Frauen, die auf verschiedene Weise nach ihrer eigenen Art von Gold suchen, kreuzen sich in diesem absoluten Klassiker. Céleste (Colette Laffont) arbeitet als Computerprogrammiererin in einer Londoner Bank und beobachtet Männerrituale im Kampf um das Goldene Kalb. Die Filmschauspielerin Ruby (Julie Christie) spielt ihre Rolle als begehrtes Objekt in der Männerwelt und erforscht die eigene Vergangenheit. Dabei kommt sie erstaunlicherweise zu denselben Einsichten wie Céleste.
